that it wasn't a fatality,'' said sheriff's Deputy Robert Smoldt, who responded to the scene. ``Based on the damage to that car, we've never seen anyone walk away from that type of crash.''

The driver of the Pontiac was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck also was taken to the hospital for evaluation and released soon after, Smoldt said.

Westbound lanes on Rye Canyon, from Crocker to Avenue Stanford, were closed for about six hours.

the investigation report, the truck was traveling west on Rye Canyon approaching Crocker when the Pontiac, traveling east, attempted to turned left onto Crocker and into the path of the truck as the light turned yellow.

The truck hit the car on the passenger side and pushed it about 60 feet before the sedan broke free of the truck and collided with a steel light pole on the driver's side.

``The car got it from both sides,'' Smoldt said. ``This is just another example of why people need to wear their seat belts. Had he not been wearing it, he probably would have been ejected at some point.''

The force of the collision caused the truck to spill spill - register spilling  about 40 gallons of diesel fuel onto the road. A hazardous-materials crew was summoned to clean the spill.

Smoldt said the driver of the Pontiac was at fault for the crash, but likely will not face charges.
