The driver, 36-year-old Alberto Castro of Ventura, was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. It is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the United States and is the top hospital on the West Coast according to US News & World Report.  and was listed in guarded condition late Wednesday, police said.

 Wednesday morning's commute through the Valley as traffic backed up for 12 miles while cleanup crews cleared the wreckage.

The crash occurred on the westbound Ventura Freeway just west of Las Virgenes Road when the driver drifted into a dirt embankment, causing the truck to overturn. The truck belongs to USA Petroleum.

Emergency personnel rescued the trapped driver, who suffered major head injuries and facial fractures. Several lanes of the freeway were shut down while crews cleaned up more than 8,000 gallons of fuel that spilled onto the road and seeped into the soil.

Investigators expected to reopen all eastbound lanes at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
