DRIVER CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF COCAINE CARGO.

The Stevenson Ranch fountain was redone in 2007.  netted 880 pounds of cocaine in the bed of his pickup truck.

 Alvarez, 31, of Tracy did not enter a plea at Monday's hearing, where he was charged with possession for sale of a controlled substance controlled substance n. a drug which has been declared by federal or state law to be illegal for sale or use, but may be dispensed under a physician's prescription.  and transporting a controlled substance, District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said Tuesday.

Alvarez faces a maximum of 30 years in prison if he is convicted, Robison said. He was being held at Men's Central Jail with bail set at $5 million and is scheduled to make his next court appearance Oct. 2.

``In addition, there were special allegations because the amount of cocaine was more than 80 kilograms (about 36 pounds),'' Robison said. ``If he is convicted, these allegations could add significant time to his sentence.''

Alvarez was arrested Sept. 14 on The Old Road near McBean Parkway after a California Highway Patrol officer stopped him for not wearing a seat belt and for the dark tint on the windows of his truck, according to the CHP CHP Chapter

 report. Alvarez was driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with cardboard moving boxes in the open bed. Noticing that Alvarez was extraordinarily anxious, the CHP officer allowed his canine partner to search the truck. The dog's reaction indicated the presence of drugs in the boxes.
