"Why he left the scene remains a mystery at this point, but the fact is he did," Bluff said.

Jose Eligio, 19, of Palmdale and Francis Okyere, 22, of Moorpark died at the scene.

Those at the gathering chased down Richardson about 6 1/2 miles from the site of the crash, which occurred on 45th Street West and Avenue G just before 1 a.m. Sunday, Bluff said.

Deputies were investigating the cause of the crash and why the suspect fled. Results of drug and alcohol tests administered shortly after the crash were not yet available.
