James Kamply Morris, 27, was identified by a co-defendant as the shooter on Dec. 5, 2003, when 18-year-old Jonte Stewart was killed outside a home that sheriff's deputies said was known as a hangout for members of a street gang.

``Mr. Morris will have contact with family and friends while serving time in prison, while the victim's mother will never have an opportunity to see her son again,'' Deputy District Attorney Benny Osorio said.

Morris and Jamel Young, 22, of Lancaster were convicted in August of murder and attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill. .

Young's sentencing was postponed until October because his attorney wants to file a motion for a new trial motion for a new trial n. a request made by the loser for the case to be tried again on the basis that there were significant legal errors in the way the trial was conducted and/or the jury or the judge sitting without a jury obviously came to an incorrect result. , officials said.

The three defendants had been beaten up at a party at the same house about a month earlier and committed the shooting in an act of revenge, prosecutors said.

Stewart's brother had been shot and killed in Inglewood, and the family moved to Palmdale to try to get away from gang violence, prosecutors said.

The defense during the trial argued that other people in another car had committed the shooting, prosecutors said.

Stewart and the three other victims were standing outside a party just before midnight when bullets were fired from a passing car.

Stewart was hit in the head, authorities said. Bullets wounded two others -- in the hip and the arm -- and grazed graze 1
