DRIVE FOR SUCCESS LOY EMERGES AT VALENCIA SHORTLY AFTER LEARNING SPORT.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Stevy Loy never thought the game that frustrates so many for so long would be so easy for her.

But just more than a year since she started golfing regularly, and just 10 months since she began taking formal lessons, Loy, who's just a sophomore, already has emerged as one of the area's best.

Loy, who last season qualified for the second day of the Foothill League individuals, revamped her swing under the tutelage TUTELAGE. It is an 18-hole course designed by Ted Robinson, ASGCA in 1964. It features 5,080 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 67.  on average about 10 strokes off her game - and that's on nine-hole courses.

``I never expected to be that good,'' she said. ``I just thought it would be fun.''

Her success, as well as that of teammate Michelle Mannix - a sophomore who's also made dramatic strides in her game this year - has Valencia High off to a strong start. The Vikings (11-7, 8-2) are expected to finish third in the league behind consensus favorite Saugus and perennial power Hart.

Loy is coming off the best week of her golfing life, shooting career-best 2-over-pars Tuesday on a nine-hole par-31 course at El Cariso in Sylmar in a league match (she tied Saugus standout Melanie DeLeon), and at nine-hole, par-33 Vista Valencia on Thursday. The Vikings established a school record with a 201 team score at El Cariso, and their 207 at Vista Valencia was the best in the school's history on that course.

Valencia coach Andrew Raevouri has never seen a golfer improve as much as Loy in such a short period, and described her potential as ``unlimited.''

And forget the scores. What's truly remarkable about Loy, Raevouri said, is her sweet swing.

``She's just got a beautiful, smooth flowing golf swing,'' Raevouri said. ``When she swings it looks effortless ef·fort·less

``She's really serious about it, but she still tries to have fun,'' Mannix said. ``Even when she plays a bad round, she doesn't beat herself up about it, she just works harder.''

Loy took up golf the summer before her freshman year at the prodding of her grandfather, Stan Yamanaka, a Lodi Lodi, city, Italy

Loy calls her grandfather after every match, and was especially excited to pass along the news about a 4-over-par at El Cariso a few weeks ago, which then was her career-best outing.

``He said `that's pretty cool', and then he said `remember now, school comes first,' '' Loy said. ``Every phone conversation he says school comes first.''

School always has been a priority for Loy, a 4.0-grade-point-average student who's currently enrolled in several challenging courses including advanced placement European history and honors English, among others.

Loy believes golfing has improved her ability to concentrate, which she thinks has helped her in the classroom.

``I was never very good at taking tests ... because I couldn't concentrate for the whole test, but now I can,'' she said. ``My mind won't wander during a test, I just noticed that recently, `hey, you Hey, You is the debut EP of Japanese band Mono. Track listing

  2. "Finlandia" - 8:06
  3. "L'America" - 4:39
  4. "Black Woods" - 11:19

know I can concentrate for the whole hour now.' ''

Loy said the challenges she faces in the classroom are more difficult than the toughest shot she ever has to make out of the rough. And all things being equal, she'd rather spend more time perfecting her swing than analyzing the historical forces that led to World War I.

``I just think it's a really fun game,'' she said. ``I look forward to coming to the course after school. It's one of the higher points in the day.''
