A natural fruit drink company completed its recall Friday of apple and carrot juice products as health officials reported more than 40 confirmed or suspected E. coli E. coli: see Escherichia coli.

One of the most seriously affected victims, 2-year-old Tara Azizi of Concord, was listed in critical but stable condition at Oakland Children's Hospital with kidney failure kidney failure

, but doctors said she is expected to recover.

The Odwalla Co., based in Half Moon Bay, launched the recall in seven Western states and Canada after E. coli cases in Washington state were linked to its unpasteurized Adj. 1. unpasteurized - not having undergone pasteurization

apple juice. Carrot juice products were recalled because they used the same assembly line at the company's Visalia, Calif., plant.

``As near as we can tell, the recall is complete,'' said Scott Lewis of the state Department of Health Services Department of Health Services may refer to:

  • California Department of Health Services a California state agency
. ``The only product left out there is most likely in consumers' homes.''

Odwalla officials said they have as yet failed to find any E. coli in their juice products, but continue examining them. The company has offered to pay medical expenses for anyone made ill by Odwalla juices.

Lewis said inspectors were going over every inch of the assembly line Friday and a government laboratory in Los Angeles was attempting to culture E. coli from juice samples.

Washington experienced the most E. coli cases from the outbreak - 15 confirmed and 10 suspected - although not all have been linked to Odwalla juices. Seven cases, including Tara's, were reported in California by Thursday, and 15 in Colorado.

Such outbreaks are far from unusual, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  in Atlanta. Connecticut had a similar outbreak traced to unpasteurized juice earlier this year.

Odwalla has always emphasized its natural approach to foods, and the apparent outbreak stunned the company founded in Santa Cruz 15 years ago.

``There are no words to describe how concerned we are, how shaken we are by it,'' said D. Stephen Williamson, the company's chief executive.

The source of the contamination is likely to be fecal matter from cows or possibly deer who walked through or near apple orchards, experts say. The strain of E. coli lives naturally in those animals, and can cling to apples that drop to the ground.
