``We want to teach people that there is a sober way to celebrate the holidays without drinking and driving,'' said Sybil Rees, contest co-chairwoman. ``If people are going to drink we want them to designate a driver.''

Applebee's Restaurant, JBones Sports Bar, Red Lobster and Holiday Inn each provided bartenders for the contest, won by JBones bartender Debra Cox with her ``(Mothers against Drunk Driving Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a nonprofit organization with more than 600 chapters nationwide.  creamer, chocolate syrup, bananas, vanilla and almond extract with ice in a blender. Then she poured the blend into a cup layered first with chocolate syrup.

She topped the concoction with whipped cream, nuts, more chocolate syrup and a cherry.

``It's tastes like a banana split in a glass,'' said Cox, who has been bartending for more than 22 years. ``I worked really hard to get it just right.''

Of the contest, Cox said: ``This just shows a sensible way of entertaining.''

Officials hoped that Thursday's event will continue to increase awareness of the importance of having a designate driver and help to lower driving-under-the-influence deaths in the Antelope Valley.

According to Deputy Mike Rice, there have been 29 traffic fatalities in the Antelope Valley so far this year and of those seven have been attributed to people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

``That's lower than what we had last year,'' said Rice, ``but the year's not over yet.''
