Vinicio Alvarado, 32, who had been living with family members in the Hawthorne and Hesperia areas, was arrested early Friday at his brother's apartment in Lawndale, police said.

The 31-year-old woman involved was freed in good condition after being discovered at the same apartment, police said.

About 9 p.m. Thursday, relatives of the woman made a 911 call to report that a man had forced himself into their house in the 2200 block of North Frederic Street, assaulted the woman and forced her into a car, police said.

``There was a good deal of verbal and physical abuse as well as threats to kill,'' said Lt. Kevin Krafft.

It was not clear to authorities whether the woman was the suspect's girlfriend or wife.

``She was staying with relatives in Burbank trying to distance herself from her boyfriend because of relationship problems,'' Krafft said.

About 15 Burbank police field personnel worked on the case, traveling to Hesperia and Lawndale in an attempt to locate the missing woman. The California Highway Patrol highway patrol
