The dozens of dresses, from sizes 4 to 20, were store samples at Chantilly Bridal and Mr. Tux in Newhall before the owners donated them to the thrift shop - just in time for Winter Formal and prom.

``We've had some teens come in. And a woman in her 40s just came in and bought a dress for an evening out,'' said Donna Waddell, co-manager of the thrift shop, operated through the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation. ``Especially with the girls, word-of-mouth is popular.''

Most of the gowns, with price tags from $15 to $50, are floor-length and come in a range of styles and colors. A black velvet number with jeweled shoulder straps hangs next to a merlot-colored strapless strap·less

Sergio and Maria Hernandez, who opened Chantilly Bridal 30 years ago, have donated floor samples to the thrift shop for years. They also work with local high schools when students cannot afford a dress for a school dance.

``Sometimes there are families that can't afford a dress,'' Maria Hernandez said. ``We have a lot of store samples. Some of my brides have even gone to the thrift shop to see the dresses. It's nice to know the dresses go to people who need them.''

The Guilded Rose, 24331 San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  in Newhall, is open from from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
