For the past two years, singles and couples have been going to Shadow Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats.  and strathspeys. The Scottish Country Dancing class is taught by husband and wife Robert and Leone Burger from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

A typical class consists of a warm-up, step practice and a simple dance. Students are then taught different dance formations similar to country western dancing and perform two to four dances an evening, depending on how difficult the steps are.

``It's a great social and recreational outlet for people who look to do something interesting,'' Leone Burger said. ``You can meet new people and get exercise. It's a good mental break - you focus on where you are going and what you're doing so it allows you to forget your problems.''

Student Jon Whitendale, who has been attending the class since July 2002, also said that the class is a great recreational and social outlet. He found out about the class while surfing surfing, sport of gliding toward the shore on a breaking wave. Surfers originally used long, cumbersome wooden boards but now ride lightweight synthetic boards that allow a greater degree of maneuverability.  the Web and decided to go to ``become more involved.''

With 20 years' experience between the two of them, the Burgers like to pass their knowledge of the dance to others. With every new dance comes a new dance partner, bringing variety to the 15 people registered in the class.

``I really like to pass on the fun of it to other people,'' she said. ``The fast music is very uplifting - and it gets you moving, it gets you excited.''
