On May 20, 1998, student Kipland "Kip" Kinkel killed his parents, William and Faith, both Spanish teachers at local high schools.

NOW: Case, 27, is studying for his doctoral degree in space physics at Boston University.

After high school, Case earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  in physics - the only student to do so while playing trumpet for a ska band that traveled twice to Japan.

He took a year off, bummed around Europe, then wound up at BU to study the solar system. "I was always fascinated by the space launches, the robotic missions, that stuff," he says.

He plans to apply for the astronaut corps but says, "I'm already living my dream," along with his astrophysicist girlfriend.

During the Thurston shooting, Case was hit by three bullets in the back and one in the leg. He was initially listed in critical condition and couldn't walk for three months.

Beyond some slight numbness in his foot, he's recovered from his injuries. And says, emotionally, he's "moved on," rarely thinking of Kinkel.

"When I wear shorts, the scars show pretty clear and I do get asked about it," he says.

But it's nothing that he dwells on.

"What I still have with me, though, is unbelievable respect for the people at Sacred Heart," he says. "They're the big heroes in this story."
