DRAWING THE LINE : FOR NOW, SAUGUS' GIBERSON, HART'S HOURIGAN GO OWN WAYS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

One linebacker is happy-go-lucky. He has worked hard at learning the position because he didn't play there until junior high. Now, he has a reputation of being one of the hardest hitters his coaches have seen.

The other linebacker is more serious about his sport and more natural at the position, having played it longer. Now, his coaches think he'll be a can't-miss Division I prospect by the end of the season.

Kevin Giberson of Saugus High School Saugus High School may refer to:

and Todd Hourigan of Hart, both seniors, are considered two of the best at their position. They know and respect each other, having played youth football together and having faced each other on high school fields.

But their friendship does not run deep.

They haven't had a lot of time for friendship, attending rival schools as they do. Lately, they've been getting ready to lead their defenses into the season. Hart opened Thursday night with Granada Hills, and Saugus plays at Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  tonight.

``It's his show, his defense,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said of Hourigan, who takes over in the middle from the graduated Marc Zimmerman. ``You've got stuff coming right at you, receivers coming over the middle. Plus, you've got to be able to step up.''

From Saugus linebacker coach Ron Hilton: ``The team knows which way we're going to go defensively. Kevin makes us better. He's got all the tools: good speed, good size, great vision.''

Yet in some ways, they cannot be separated. Toughness runs through them, which was seen in their pre-high school days playing for the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Athletic Association Warriors.

Thanks in part to Giberson and Hourigan, the Warriors trailed just 6-0 at halftime before losing 18-6.

The next year, the boys were in eighth grade but were in a league that had ninth graders. Despite another weight and size disadvantage, the team went 5-5.

Giberson credits Hourigan as the one who taught him how to read opposing offenses back in eighth grade. And it was Hourigan's father, Dave, who was the head coach on that team and put Giberson next to his son.

It is their fathers who are the close friends. Dave Hourigan was the head coach and Kevin Giberson Sr. was the defensive coordinator on the Warriors team that featured both sons. When one child got hurt, each father felt like it was his child who was injured in·jure
