All eight victims, all from Canyon Country, were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, and all but one had been treated and released by Monday.

Kathy Memmott, 37, was reported in fair condition after bowel surgery. The van was hit by an Acura Integra whose driver lost control heading south about 9:15 p.m., apparently while passing another car, deputies said.

A neighborhood resident told deputies that she saw the Integra's driver playing games with the drivers of a black truck and a second lighter-colored truck about 15 minutes before the accident, Slater said.

"She saw heard rapid accelerations, braking," he said. "Fifteen minutes later there was the collision."

However, the deputy acknowledged there were no witnesses who saw any drag-racing. Slater said the driver of the van did not notice because his eyes were focused on the Integra, which was heading straight at him after spinning out of control.

"That is not true," said the youth. "I was not drag-racing, but I really can't say more."

Passenger Andrew Skinner, 15, was treated and released from the hospital the day of the accident, while another passenger Phillip Leafdale, also 15, went home Monday, the youth said.

Deputies are seeking additional witnesses to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call traffic investigators at 255-1121.
