 organizations have suggested that the DR take advantage of the lower cost of shipping freight from Puerto Rico Puerto Rico (pwār`tō rē`kō), island (2005 est. pop. 3,917,000), 3,508 sq mi (9,086 sq km), West Indies, c.1,000 mi (1,610 km) SE of Miami, Fla.  to the US, reports Hoy Hoy, island, 13 mi (21 km) long and 6 mi (9.7 km) wide, off N Scotland, second largest of the Orkney Islands. It is located at the southwestern side of the Scapa Flow anchorage.  (June 3, 2002). While it costs US$2,000-S$2,500 per container of freight from the DR to US territory, it only costs US$600 to send a container from Puerto Rico to the US. Juan Guiliani Cury of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic Dominican Republic (dəmĭn`ĭkən), republic (2005 est. pop. 8,950,000), 18,700 sq mi (48,442 sq km), West Indies, on the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The capital and largest city is Santo Domingo.  and Armando del Valle Munoz of the Puerto Rico Government office here, said they are in favor of signing an alliance between Puerto Rico and DR. They also mentioned the possibility of refining Dominican sugar in Puerto Rico. Del Valle said Puerto Rico has the largest sugar refinery in the Caribbean with capacity to refine Dominican sugar.
