SmartRAID IV Features and Benefits

The new PM3334W SmartRAID IV disk array controllers is PCI 2.1 compliant and both controllers feature a new embedded processor A CPU chip used in a system other than a general purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. Such chips are used by the billions every year in a myriad of products. See embedded system.  technology based on a core Motorola 68040VL/40MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  processor. This high-performance processor is dedicated to executing all of the array, ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

functions, increasing on-board processing power up to 33 percent over previous SmartRAID IV controllers.

"These new SmartRAID IV controllers are specifically designed to satisfy the demanding performance and reliability requirements of a large, high-end server market," said John (Johnny) Cardosi, DPT's vice president of distribution sales and marketing. "SmartRAID IV's increased processing power translates into more I/Os per second and more data throughput, especially in processor-intensive RAID-5 environments."

New SmartRAID IV Enhancements

In addition to increased processor performance, the new SmartRAID IV disk array controllers feature several new enhancements designed to maximize MIS management efficiency and productivity. DPT utilizes the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) to provide real-time monitoring and detection of impending im·pend

disk drive failures. Alerting users or system administrators in advance of failure ensures data reliability, decreasing system down time and facilitating system recovery.

The new SAF-TE SAF-TE SCSI Access Fault-Tolerant Enclosure  specification developed by Conner and Intel (SCSI Accessed Fault Tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  Enclosures) provides a standard framework for management of all intelligent enclosures. Most RAID and server enclosures currently available are not standardized and are difficult to manage. DPT utilizes the SAF-TE framework to develop additional system management capabilities to improve the reliability, availability and serviceability Reliability, Availability and Serviceability is a computer hardware engineering term. It originated from IBM to advertise the robustness of their mainframe computers. The concept is often known by the acronym RAS.  of RAID subsystems and servers. FLASH ROM Another term for flash memory. Since flash chips can be updated over and over, the ROM (read only) designation is somewhat misleading. "ROM" is used more to mean not volatile than not changeable. See flash memory.

Flash ROM - Flash Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
is a new technology that allows prompt and easy updates of firmware. DPT's new firmware-based diagnostics minimizes run times and provides remote management. This centralized support with distributed processing The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system. It started with the first minicomputers. Today, distributed processing is called "distributed computing." See also client/server.  conserves MIS and corporate resources.

To enable a system to grow as an organization's business needs change, DPT's upgradability provides a cost-effective, hardware-based solution with a logical growth path. The new multi-channel upgradable SmartRAID IV controllers deliver Wide SCSI data transfers of up to 20Mbytes/second. With DPT's unique multi-channel architecture, users can easily add up to two additional channels for increased performance. SmartRAID IV's new SX4030 Channel Expansion Modules simply attach to the base SmartRAID IV controller and provide the utmost in channel expansion flexibility. Adding an SX4030 Channel Expansion Module as opposed to adding an additional array controller saves precious server resources such as I/O addresses, IRQ's and DMA (1) (Digital Media Adapter) See digital media hub.

Standard SmartRAID IV Features and Benefits

As part of the SmartRAID IV family, the PM3332W and PM3334W share all of the common features of a SmartRAID IV controller, including: support for hardware-based RAID levels 0, 1 and 5, together with -- "dual-level" RAID, complete driver support for all of the major operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. ; up to 64MBs of hardware caching support, using standard SIMMs or DPT's exclusive ECC-protected SIMMs, and on-board circuitry which passes vital information, such as disk, power, temperature and voltage conditions to DPT's Storage Manager software for event logging and notification.

Each SmartRAID IV controller includes DPT's award-winning Storage Manager software to simplify RAID setup, optimization and management across multiple operating systems. Although other RAID management systems focus on a limited set of operating systems, DPT provides support across multiple operating systems. Most high-end client server systems are composed of multiple servers running a variety of operating systems.

Storage Manager's enhanced analysis capabilities monitor and record the operating condition of multiple array subsystems on multiple servers from a single remote network connection. An intuitive graph facilitates prioritization of array rebuilds, re-builds and diagnostics, directly impacting system performance. For array optimization, Storage Manager offers several user-tunable controller and cache parameters.

"SmartRAID IV is the turnkey solution that the reseller channel can offer to their high-end corporate accounts. It is a feature-rich solution that is fully integrated from the GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  software to the hot-swappable disk drive," said Cardosi.

SmartRAID IV storage cabinets are offered in wide or narrow models with "hot-swappable" and fixed drive bays, dual power supplies and fan units. Rack-Mountable cabinets are also available.

DPT and SmartRAID IV: An Industry Perspective

DPT is the only industry player to provide RAID and cache upgradable SCSI host adapters. DPT's SmartCache family technology delivers enhanced I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
performance and is designed to be a powerful complement to software caching schemes like those found in Windows `95, OS/2, NetWare, Windows NT, and Unix. Unlike competitive SCSI adapters, SmartCache IV's unique combination of a high-performance SCSI adapter and upgradability to RAID and caching provides a cost-effective, hardware-based solution with a logical growth path to enable customers to enhance their systems as their business needs change.

DPT, a long-time proponent of storage management and protocol standardization, was also the first controller company to offer a complete storage management strategy, releasing its SCSI Storage Manager software in 1992. Storage Manager software and DPT RAID controllers provide a wealth of storage device management features, including management of some of the intelligent RAID and server enclosures. These features include the ability to control an enclosure's indicator lights, monitor the enclosure temperature and voltage and automate some of the disk array failure recovery operations.

SmartRAID IV, DPT's award-winning line of fully integrated, high-performance RAID-Ready disk array subsystems, includes: the SmartRAID IV controller, external SmartRAID IV peripheral enclosure, disk drives, and cables.
