DPT introduces one, two and three channel SmartRAID IV controllers at aggressive pricing $209 to $239 below competitive costs.MAITLAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1996--Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) Tuesday announced the company is offering one, two and three channel SmartRAID IV controllers at aggressive pricing. The new multi-channel configurations feature DPT's new SCSI-3 compliant PM3332W EISA (Extended ISA) Pronounced "ee-suh." A PC bus standard that extends the 16-bit ISA bus (AT bus) to 32 bits and provides bus mastering. ISA cards can plug into an EISA slot. and PM3334W PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS. (2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus). (2.1 compliant) to Wide SCSI A SCSI interface that transfers 16 bits in parallel rather than 8 bits. See SCSI. (hardware, standard) Wide SCSI - A variant on the SCSI-2 interface. It uses a 16-bit bus - double the width of the original SCSI-1 - and therefore cannot be connected to a SCSI-1 bus. disk array controllers and the new SX4030 SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. expansion cards. DPT priced the new multi-channel packages below the cost of purchasing DPT's single channel RAID adapter and one or two channel expansion modules as separate purchases to aggressively market the new configurations through its worldwide distribution network. The two-channel kit lists for $125 less than the individually-priced units and is $209 less (List) than the comparable Mylex unit.* The three-channel SmartRAID IV package reflects a savings of $145 over the individually priced units -- a retail savings of $239 over the Mylex three-channel card.(a) SmartRAID IV is DPT's high-end client/server RAID solution, featuring: support for hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5 together with "dual-level" array with up to 64MB hardware cache; embedded 68040/40 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. processor; support of 16-bit Wide SCSI for throughput of up to 20MB/s full bus mastering A bus design that allows the peripheral controllers (plug-in boards) to access the computer's memory independently of the CPU. It allows data transfers to take place between the peripheral device and memory while the CPU is performing other tasks. bus mastering - bus master with scatter/gather data transfers; multi- channel scaleability; FLASH ROM Another term for flash memory. Since flash chips can be updated over and over, the ROM (read only) designation is somewhat misleading. "ROM" is used more to mean not volatile than not changeable. See flash memory. Flash ROM - Flash Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory for firmware updates; and Global hot- spare support. "DPT's new multi-channel packages offer immediate costs savings for the buyer seeking a multi-channel solution today," explained Johnny Cardosi, vice president of distribution sales and marketing. "For the customer purchasing a single-channel DPT controller, only DPT offers multi-channel upgradability. With competitive controllers, an end user (who wants to add channels) must replace the original card to preserve the slot or purchase a whole new controller, which takes up an additional slot. DPT's scaleability gives the end user a logical growth path and the distribution channel opportunities for future sales to the same customer base. With SmartRAID IV's performance, reliability and aggressive pricing, SmartRAID IV is...the Smart Choice." SmartRAID IV controllers (List $1,495) and the SX4030s (List $365 - one channel/$615 two channels) are also available for separate purchase. Free with each SmartRAID purchase are DPT's enhanced firmware and Storage Manager utility, featuring: easy setup, optimization and management across multiple OS; flexible RAID configurations; predictive failure via S.M.A.R.T.; firmware-based diagnostics; user-tunable controller/cache parameters; enhanced RAID- 5 write performance; enhanced task priority management; delayed rebuilds; CD digital audio extraction A feature of modern CD-ROM and DVD drives that allows the digital audio data from CDs to be passed to the computer via the drive's IDE or SCSI interface. Before this feature became available, ripping CD tracks required using the analog output of the drive and converting it back to digital support and extended Storage Manager for Windows `95; SCO Unix An enhanced version of Unix System V Release 3.2 for Intel processors from SCO.
