DPT announces availability of SmartCache III and SmartRAID for SCO OpenServer Release 5.

MAITLAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 1995--Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) Tuesday announced the availability of SmartCache III SCSI host adapters and SmartRAID disk array controllers for SCO OpenServer A server operating system for the Intel platform from SCO. It is based on Unix System V Release 3.2 and includes the Motif and X Window user interfaces and standard Unix networking (TCP/IP, NFS and NIS). SCO OpenServer has optional SMP support for up to 30 processors.  Release 5, the next-generation Business Critical Server.

The SmartCache III and SmartRAID product families provide SCO's customers with the highest performance solution available in the marketplace today.

"DPT has worked closely with SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc.  to ensure that OpenServer 5.0, in conjunction with the SmartCache III SCSI SCSI

and SmartRAID products, will provide the ultimate in mass storage performance, compatibility and functionality," said Joe Ballard, DPT's manager of third party relations.

"DPT is a recognized leader in the SCSI and RAID markets and its products are used by many of the leading PC manufacturers," said Mike Shelton, SCO's director of product marketing, "SCO OpenServer Release 5 support for DPT's line of SmartCache III and SmartRAID products enhances peripheral connectivity and provides flexible storage solutions for the SCO OpenServer environment."

SmartCache III SCSI host adapters provide a range of intelligent capabilities for SCSI storage subsystems to increase throughput. These capabilities include bus mastering A bus design that allows the peripheral controllers (plug-in boards) to access the computer's memory independently of the CPU. It allows data transfers to take place between the peripheral device and memory while the CPU is performing other tasks.

, command queuing and scatter/gather memory transfers. SmartCache III SCSI host adapters also offer users the only caching and RAID upgradable capabilities on the market today. In addition, SmartCache III adapters offer users support for a variety of SCSI peripherals including tape drives, Magneto-Optical drives and CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

SmartRAID disk array products offer high performance, fault-tolerant, RAID-ready storage solutions with support for all major operating systems. SmartRAID subsystems are fully integrated, RAID-ready solutions that include the SmartRAID controller, an external peripheral enclosure, disk drives and cables. In addition, SmartRAID supports hardware-based RAID levels 0, 1 and 5, including "dual level" RAID. Integrated "hot-spare" drive support provides for easy, on-line replacement and rapid recovery from disk failure, and when used with DPT's SmartRAID subsystems, SmartRAID supports an "auto-rebuild" function which allows users to replace failed drives without interrupting user activity.

Installation and set-up is simplified with DPT's unique Storage Manager software. Unlike other subsystems, subsystem management with DPT's Storage Manager, an easy-to-use graphical utility, is readily accomplished. Storage Manager, which is included free with the SmartCache III and SmartRAID products, offers subsystem management from the server console or attached terminals. Features include array configuration diagnostics for hard drives and array groups, I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device.
