DPT First to Ship PCI-to-Differential SCSI RAID Controller to PC File Server Market.

MAITLAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1997--Distributed Processing Technology(r) (DPT), a leading supplier of high-performance SCSI SCSI

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
and RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) solutions for servers and workstations, announced Monday the company is now shipping the industry's first PCI-to-Differential SCSI RAID controller A disk controller card that supports one or more RAID configurations. Originally only for SCSI drives, RAID controllers have become very popular for PATA and SATA drives. See RAID.  to its distribution channel partners worldwide. "We are delighted to be the first manufacturer to offer a high- performance PCI-to-Differential SCSI RAID controller to the file server and workstation marketplace," said Johnny Cardosi, vice president of distribution sales and marketing for DPT. "This product will give integrators and end users alike the flexibility they critically need when configuring systems using high-speed Ultra Wide SCSI A SCSI interface that transfers 16 bits in parallel rather than 8 bits. See SCSI.

technology. The peripheral bus Also known as an "input/output bus" or "I/O bus," it is the data pathway that connects peripheral devices to the CPU. The PCI and USB busses are commonly used in PCs. ISA, EISA, VL-bus and Micro Channel busses were used in earlier PCs. Contrast with system bus. See bus.  length limitations of single- ended Ultra SCSI will prompt migration to differential SCSI for many applications."

Experts agree the risk of signal loss and noise problems rise dramatically when data traveling at Ultra speed pass over a single- ended SCSI bus exceeding 1.5 meters (59 inches) in length. The differential SCSI bus solves the obvious configuration restrictions of the single-ended bus by extending the maximum SCSI bus length to 25 meters (82 feet), allowing integrators and end users to attach the number of devices that Wide SCSI allows (up to sixteen devices per channel) and to space system components practically.

Features

Unique to DPT's PM3334UDW is its ability to be field upgraded to two or three channels via attachment of an SX4030 SCSI channel expansion module, and to mix SCSI interface types. The SX4030 is available with one or two channels and in three different SCSI interfaces giving users unprecedented flexibility. The SX4030/1UDW and SX4030/2UDW add one and two Ultra Differential Wide SCSI channels respectively; the SX4030/1DW and SX4030/2DW add one and two Fast SCSI-2 Differential Wide channels respectively; and the SX4030/1UW and SX4030/2UW add one and two Single-ended Ultra Wide SCSI channels respectively.

For DPT customers who currently have single-ended SmartRAID IV controllers, DPT offers an easy and cost-effective upgrade path to differential SCSI. Both the SX4030/xUDW (Ultra Differential Wide) and SX4030/xDW (Fast SCSI-2 Differential Wide) SCSI channel expansion modules can upgrade the single-ended Ultra Wide PM3334UW (PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

The PM3334UDW controller includes one 68-pin high density internal connector and one 68-pin very high density external connector. It features hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 0/1, 0/5, an embedded 68040/40MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. Storage Manager includes support for a wider array of operating systems than its competitors, supports heterogeneous operating system environments, and allows control of server storage via workstation clients.

Pricing

The single channel PM3334UDW RAID controller including Storage Manager utility, documentation and Wide SCSI cable is list priced at $1,660; the two channel model (PM3334UDW/2) is list priced at $2,292; and the three channel model (PM3334UDW/3) is list priced at $2,620.

The SX4030/1UDW (Ultra Differential Wide) and SX4030/1DW (Fast SCSI-2 Differential Wide) SCSI channel expansion modules both list at $699. The two channel models, SX4030/2UDW and SX4030/2DW, both list at $1,159. Single-ended Ultra Wide SCSI channel expansion modules include the single channel SX4030/1UW list priced at $365 and the two channel SX4030/2UW, list priced at $615.

All differential SCSI channel expansion modules include internal 68-pin high density internal connector(s). For integrators with special requirements, differential SCSI channel expansion modules with external 68-pin very high density external connector(s) can be made available by request.
