DPT Announces Support for Linux Operating System Across the Entire SmartRAID V RAID Controller Product Line.

MAITLAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999--Distributed Processing Technology (DPT(R)), a leading supplier of high-performance SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
and Fibre Channel RAID solutions for servers and workstations, today announced its entire family of new SmartRAID V Ultra2 SCSI See Ultra SCSI.  and Fibre Channel RAID controllers and host adapters now support the Red Hat(R) Linux 5.2 operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
. The software driver to support Linux is now available for the SmartRAID V Millennium, Century, and Decade PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

RAID controllers and host adapters: RAID solutions for all applications, from enterprise to entry-level servers.

DPT is exhibiting its Linux-ready SmartRAID V products at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, in the USA Multimedia, PC, and Components Pavilion in Hall 9, Stand C16, Booth C1, March 18-24. DPT will be displaying and conducting live demonstrations at the show. Sales, and technical support personnel will be on-site to answer questions about the SmartRAID V RAID controller family and its new Linux support.

"Customer requests for DPT to support the Linux operating system with the new SmartRAID V products has been extremely strong since the products were first announced at Fall Comdex in November," said Johnny Cardosi, DPT vice president of worldwide distribution sales and marketing. "The development of Red Hat Linux Red Hat Linux, assembled by Red Hat, was a popular, "middle-aged" Linux distribution (not as old as Slackware but older than Ubuntu) upon its discontinuation in 2004.[1]

Red Hat Linux 1.0 was released on November 3, 1994.
support for SmartRAID V has been in direct response to this overwhelming demand."

The strong demand for SmartRAID V Linux support is due to the rapidly growing acceptance of Linux as an alternative operating system for internet web servers and for handling mission-critical applications. In order for Linux-based systems to succeed in these environments, they require the high-level of performance and fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

(architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy.

2.
that SmartRAID V RAID solutions can provide.

SmartRAID V users are now able to install, configure and manage their storage under Linux via SMOR (Storage Manager On ROM) bios-based utility, included with all SmartRAID V controllers. DPT's GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  storage management utility, also included with all SmartRAID V controllers, will provide support for Linux in the near future.

The Linux driver is downloadable at no cost from the DPT web site at http://www.dpt.com. It is compatible for use with all SmartRAID V controllers and host adapters, including those now in the field.

SmartRAID V Ultra2 SCSI RAID controllers and host adapters have been shipping to distribution channel partners worldwide since the first of the year. They include the high performance Millennium, the mid-range performance Century, and the low-cost, entry-level Decade RAID controllers, and the Century Ultra2 SCSI adapters.

In addition to Linux, DPT SmartRAID V controllers also support several other operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  including Windows(R) NT(R), Win 95/98, NetWare(R), SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. (R) OpenServer 5, SCO Unix 3.2.4.2, SCO UnixWare 7, and UnixWare(R) 2.1.4.2.
