DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 2002

These coal-fired plants are located on the Ohio River Ohio River

Major river, eastern central U.S. Formed by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, it flows northwest out of Pennsylvania, and west and southwest to form the state boundaries of Ohio–West Virginia, Ohio-Kentucky, Indiana-Kentucky, and
and produce 3,000 megawatts of electricity, or enough electricity to supply approximately 3 million homes. DPL employees regularly work on the river unloading coal from barges and operating tugboats. At times, this work is made more challenging with strong currents, rough wake, and adverse weather conditions.

The detailed training session covered several aspects of river water rescue. The first involved getting a person who had fallen overboard o·ver·board

In another exercise, the rescue team practiced transferring a victim from the river to the shore. Normal river levels allow direct access to the shore through the coal unloader area or the construction dock. However, there are times when the Ohio River can be as much as 15 feet above normal, making these points inaccessible. With flood conditions, it would become necessary to lift the victim to shore using a rope and pulley pulley, simple machine consisting of a wheel over which a rope, belt, chain, or cable runs.

 system.

As a result of this hands-on training, DPL employees are now better prepared to respond as rescue volunteers in the event of a river emergency.
