-- Use of lighting and extension cords which are UL (Underwriters Laboratory) approved.

-- Use of lights specifically designed for indoor or outdoor display. Outdoor lights often burn hotter than other lights, while indoor lights may not be waterproof.

-- Discard lights that have frayed cords, damaged plugs or light sockets.

-- Use power strips that have a built-in circuit breaker and do not overload your home's circuits.

-- Use an automatic timer to turn lights off and save energy.
