DOWNPOUR CHAOS HITS DERRY CITY.

RUSH hour traffic was brought to a standstill last night after a three hour thunderstorm thunderstorm, violent, local atmospheric disturbance accompanied by lightning, thunder, and heavy rain, often by strong gusts of wind, and sometimes by hail.  caused flash floods across Derry city Derry City can refer to:

Workers trying to make their way through the streets faced several road closures as emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  tried to cope with the chaos.

Many roads were closed as cars and houses flooded.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said they had been inundated with calls for help.

He added: "It's mainly calls to people who have been trapped in their cars. You name it, the area was flooded."

One of the worst hit areas was Strand Road, while several houses in Foyle Road suffered flooding.

Low lying areas such as Westland Street and Rossville Street in the Bogside were also affected.

Meanwhile, the roof of a bungalow in Brackley Heights in Cullybackey, Co Antrim, burst into flames after it was struck by lightning. No one was injured.
