DOWNEY DENIES CHARGES : ACTOR ENTERS PLEA IN GUN, DRUGS CASE.

Actor Robert Downey Jr., his face unshaven and his hands shackled behind his back, pleaded innocent Monday to gun and drug charges from one of three recent arrests.

After his plea was entered, Downey returned to a jail hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for drug addiction drug addiction

Downey, 31, of Malibu was arrested June 23 by police who said they found crack cocaine, heroin and an unloaded .357-caliber Magnum in his truck.

``I don't think he knows why he left,'' English said. ``He left and he came back, and what was in his mind is very difficult to say. I don't think Robert could tell you what was on his mind.''

Downey received an Oscar nomination for the 1992 film ``Chaplin.'' Other film credits include ``Restoration,'' ``Short Cuts,'' ``Natural Born Killers'' and ``Less Than Zero,'' a 1987 film in which he played a cocaine-addicted teen-ager.
