DOWN THE AISLE IN STYLE\Trends join elegance with retro refinement.

Byline: Barbara De Witt Daily News Staff Writer

This year's brides are blushing with Cinderella chic.

Tulle was built around a 7th-century monastery. , rustling raw silk and regal crowns, the newest looks in bridal gowns are fit for a fairy-tale princess. Even the silhouette is romantic, often featuring princess seams that fit and flatter most figures, said Michele Piccione, designer for Alfred Angelo Bridals.

"We've banished extravagance, and the fashion stance for spring is elegance and refinement, projecting greater purity of line," said Piccione.

"It's a fashion trend influenced by Walt Disney's 'Cinderella' as well as the musical "Beauty and the Beast Beauty and the Beast is a traditional fairy tale (type 425C -- search for a lost husband -- in the Aarne-Thompson classification). The first published version of the fairy tale was a meandering rendition by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in ," said Angelica Divinagracia, owner of The Bridal Suite in Sherman Oaks.

According to Divinagracia, "Sheaths are still in fashion, but brides have found that sheaths can be worn to so many events that they're no longer special. Now they come in and tell me they want to be a princess for a day. I mean, how often can you ride in a horse-drawn coach and wear a tulle gown?"

Although tulle-skirted gowns are the hottest look of the year and are featured in numerous bridal collections, the theme has also brought new interest in Renaissance styles, particularly those with a bustier-tight bodice lacing up the front. And instead of bright white or even ivory, many brides are requesting a pale gold gown of paper-thin shantung Shantung: see Shandong, China.  silk over tulle petticoats.

"Gold wedding parties have replaced the black-and-white themes of the '80s and are looking much fresher than the jewel-toned bridesmaid dresses," said Divinagracia. But don't even think of gold lame. Rather it's a watered gold, sort of like champagne or rum pink, she said, and it's designed in sheer organdy or·gan·dy also or·gan·die

. "It's a new color, so they want it, but jewel tones are still requested - even in the summer - because they brighten up a wedding party," said store manager Victoria Renzelman.

The retro trend in bridal styles, like much of current fashion, can be traced to the early '60s, when Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn set the fashion pace. Shop around and you'll see plenty of halter halter

"Sabrina is the new buzzword A term that refers to the latest technology or a term that sounds catchy. If not a flash in the pan, new technologies become mainstream. For example, Java was a hot buzzword in the 1990s, but should remain a major topic for decades. ," said Patti Scalero, owner of the Victorian Gardens bridal salon in Studio City, "and I think it's caught on because you can be bare without feeling naked. And although 'Sabrina' is the title of the Audrey Hepburn movie, young women identify it more with Jackie Kennedy. They even ask for pillbox hats for the bridal party."

Modern Bride magazine's fashion editor, Martine Aerts-Niddam, agreed on the nostalgia angle.

"The early '60s silhouette story continues stronger than ever, and the princess silhouette is present in practically every showroom ... but the empire is coming in strongly for spring '96," said Aerts-Niddam of yet another style linked to Kennedy and Hepburn. She added that with the focus on simplicity there's an abundance of subtle, dressmaker details, including illusion necklines, fabric panels, shirring shirr

, fabric-covered buttons and roses, and bands of satin to create textural interest.

While crowns are a fad, shoulder-length veils on simple satin headbands are often paired with the '60s styles. And instead of opera-length gloves, you'll see new interest wrist-length gloves, said Divinagracia, who added that pearl jewelry is traditional, but vintage crystal beads are newer.
