DOWN BUT NOT OUT HART STILL WILL BE FACTOR IN LEAGUE RACE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

For a high school football league that includes a Hart team that has won 13 titles and 63 league games in a row, the upcoming Foothill League race sure seems difficult to predict.

While Hart has sputtered to a 2-3 start, the other five teams - Canyon (5-0), Valencia (4-1), Saugus (4-1), Burroughs (4-1) and even Burbank (3-2) - are stronger than ever.

There is perhaps the most parity in league history heading into this week's openers, so expect some interesting developments.

First things First Things is a monthly ecumenical journal concerned with the creation of a "religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society" (First Things website).  first, however. Under no circumstances should anyone count out defending Southern Section Div. II champion Hart. Despite lackluster losses to St. Bonaventure in Week 2 and Birmingham of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  in Week 4, Hart rebounded with a dramatic 17-16 road victory Friday over defending Div. I champion Loyola of L.A. The game was decided on Paul Weinstein's 32-yard field goal in the waning seconds, and the triumph might be just the spark Hart needs for yet another title.

Perhaps Hart quarterback Tyler Lyon isn't as polished as predecessors Sean Norton (Fresno State), Matt Moore (ex-UCLA), Kyle Matter (Stanford) and Kyle Boller Kyle Bryan Boller (born June 17 1981 in Burbank, California) is an American football quarterback who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. Plus he's a relatively raw junior who is still learning the game.

Usually, Hart makes its most significant and steady improvement over the final month of the regular season and during the playoffs, and that means Lyon probably is on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of a terrific season. Lyon is on pace to pass for more than 4,000 yards if Hart advances to the section final for the seventh consecutive season.

As for the other five teams, perhaps all have the potential to finish among the top two. When's the last time you could say that?

Valencia seemed all but invincible until a humbling 33-3 loss to visiting Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. .

That said, if Valencia and Hart played today, it would be difficult to gauge a favorite. They're very close.

Valencia's Michael Herrick has passed for 1,379 yards and 15 touchdowns. But Herrick, who prefers not to scramble To encode (encrypt) data in order to make it indecipherable without having a secret key to "unlock" it. The term came from the early days of cryptography which camouflaged analog transmissions with secret frequency patterns. , has thrown 10 interceptions and was sacked four times Friday.

Herrick is expected to lead Valencia to victories in the coming weeks over Burroughs of Burbank and Burbank - though nothing is automatic this year, even against the Burbank schools.

Meanwhile, Canyon is the only team without a loss, and a hard-fought 28-22 victory Friday at Crespi of Encino gave the Cowboys credibility after a relatively easy opening stretch.

It should be pointed out Canyon has lost only to state powers Hart (twice) and Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

(twice) over the past 2 1/2 seasons, so common sense dictates the Cowboys are contenders under any conditions.

This year, Canyon has suffered several key injuries, but quarterback Will Brogan (896 yards, 11 touchdowns) has improved over the past two weeks, passing for 227 yards and four touchdowns against Crespi. Canyon also boasts perhaps the league's dominant running back in Justin Williams For the basketball player, see .

(826 yards, 15 touchdowns), a solid offensive line led by returning standouts Jake Marshall and Alex Shahin, a promising linebacker in Ryan Colletta, and an excellent kicking game.

Saugus has made the biggest turnaround. After consecutive two-win seasons, the Centurions are coming off their biggest victory since second-year coach Jason Bornn took over, a 35-34 double-overtime win over previously undefeated St. Francis of La Canada.

Saugus, led by standout tight end/defensive lineman Kody Kurowski, opens against Hart on Friday at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , and suddenly a Hart victory doesn't figure to be so automatic.

``This team has shown a lot of character. They keep fighting until the end,'' said Bornn, whose only loss this season was to Notre Dame two weeks ago. ``We're in the hunt, and there's no reason why we shouldn't be a top 10 team right now. It doesn't get any easier for us from here, but I'm excited and the kids are excited, too.''

Burbank quarterback Mike McDonald Mike McDonald (born June 22, 1958 in North Hollywood, California) is a former professional American football player who played long snapper for nine seasons in the NFL.  is on a tear. He has passed for 1,533 yards 21 touchdowns (already a school single-season record), and he's doing so without top returning receiver Jesse Ayers, who's expected to return soon from an injury.

However, Burbank has played weak competition, so the Bulldogs have a lot to prove. Neighborhood rival Burroughs, led by Arizona-bound offensive lineman Eben Britton and swift running back Thomas Kyle, is off to its best start in many years. Like Burbank, however, Burroughs hasn't played a challenging schedule, so the next few weeks should be a proving ground.
