The Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory was established in 1992, and it is the only independent facility in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. with the ability to conduct in-house research on large-bore stationary engines used for natural gas transmission. The laboratory was funded by a consortium of gas pipeline companies with a mission to develop new technologies that will reduce the emissions and operating costs of these engines. Dow originally provided 1,500 gallons of AMBITROL NTF 50 coolant to the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory in 1996 for their Large-Bore Engine Testbed (LBET) facility. The LBET features a large-bore stationary engine with a 10,000 ft-lbf torque capacity, and the AMBITROL coolant has been used in this engine for the past three years with no apparent fluid deterioration and minimal maintenance. The Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory is currently being expanded through the addition of three more engines which are being donated by engine manufacturers and a pipeline company. These new engines will be used by the laboratory to assist the industry in addressing emissions and performance related needs on multiple engine types. AMBITROL NTF 50 coolant is fully formulated and prediluted, and it is based on propylene glycol propylene glycol a chemical used industrially as an antifreeze, solvent stabilizer, as a preservative in liquid livestock feeds and pharmaceutically as a vehicle or solvent for medicinal preparations. , deionized water and a complete inhibitor system. AMBITROL coolants are specially formulated to meet the severe requirements of large, heavy-duty stationary engines, and they are available in propylene glycol and ethylene glycol-based formulations. The corrosion inhibitor package used by AMBITROL coolants is free of silicates, so no gel or scale buildup occurs.
