Douglass, among the top-rated high school pitchers in the nation, was the second-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles This article is about the contemporary American major league baseball team. For other uses, see Baltimore Oriole (disambiguation).

in Major League Baseball's amateur draft, the 73rd pick overall.

``I don't think it's hit me yet,'' Douglass said. ``I'm still not feeling anything.''

The 11 a.m. phone call informing the 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior of the Orioles' pick capped a strange year for Douglass, who entered his final season with the Antelopes as the 23rd-best high school prospect in the nation, according to according to

his throwing arm. The announcement drew nation-wide attention.

``Everyone's supported me, all the scouts, all my friends and family,'' Douglass said of his decision to leave the team. ``The scouts thought I should've done it earlier. I wouldn't change a thing.''

Douglass, who's fastball has been clocked consistently in the low 90s, was 4-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 1997, compared to a 1.09 ERA as a junior.

``They let me call all my own pitches last year,'' he said. ``This year, you throw a 92 mile-per-hour fastball by someone, and they call for a change-up the next pitch. What is that?''

The decision to leave, he maintains, was his only option. And, after adding a change-up to his repertoire, the Orioles obviously agreed.

``Before the season I thought I'd go a lot higher in the draft,'' he said. ``Before that happened, when I didn't do 100 push-ups the day before a game, I was throwing 91 or 92 (miles-per-hour) pretty consistently.

``I started throwing better after I left the team.''

Douglass has signed a letter of intent with Pepperdine, an option he would have considered his main one had he gone in the third round or lower. Now, the Orioles have 15 days to make an offer before he becomes a free agent.

``You want to play professional baseball, but you've got to think about what you'd be missing out on,'' he said. ``I've got to listen to what they say, but it will have to be good to pass up a four-year college education.''
