``I think we have a shot (at a sweep),'' said Palmdale coach Bill Paxton, whose team has won 10 straight. ``We're a hot baseball team right now. But first we have to get past Quartz Hill South.''

Quartz Hill South features a lot of young players from Quartz Hill High. Palmdale defeated AV North 16-10 two weeks ago at Rosamond High.

Harper is looking forward to the Palmdale doubleheader.

``We're two good clubs,'' AV North coach Frank Harper Frank Harper (b 1962) is a British actor. First-place finishers in all five district divisions are guaranteed playoff slots, with three wild-card entries (based on overall records) seeded in the district tournament starting Wednesday.

AV North, comprised of all small-schools players, is led by catcher Mario Varela, who was 3 for 3 in the AV South win on Thursday, raising his average to .509. Varela leads all area players with 34 RBI RBI

Harper likes his chances because of his pitching depth.

``We have six guys who can throw,'' Harper said.

This is the first year AV North - faced with logistics/travel problems since players are so spread out - has been in playoff contention.

``It's been a long time coming,'' Harper said. ``These players have been with each other for a while now, and they've grown up. We're having a good time.''
