 Mortensen must decide between competing in the 1,600- or the 3,200-meter runs.

The Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. It is a California Distinguished School, and offers curriculum at all levels for Thousand Oaks students. The mascot is the lancer.  runner definitely will compete in both races during today's Southern Section divisional track and field finals at Long Beach City College. She's the favorite to win the Division I title in both events.

But doubling all the way to the State Meet is something few athletes have been able to accomplish, and Mortensen, who is the area record-holder in the 3,200 and ranked No. 6 all-time nationally, may choose to concentrate on that race sometime down the road.

One advantage for Mortensen is that at the State Meet, which takes place in two weeks at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century. , she will not have to run during the first day of preliminaries.

That time out could help Mortensen if she attempts to beat her personal-best of 10 minutes, 7.10 seconds in the 3,200.

``If you decide to run just the 3,200 you can go straight to the finals,'' Farrell said. ``I can see that being a factor at some point.''

Competition will take place today in four divisions, with the top nine performances in each event advancing to next week's Masters Meet at Cerritos.

Other top local entrants include La Reina's Kim Utterson, Calabasas' Akira Kennett, Thousand Oaks' Jenn Detmer and Simi Valley's Shannon Livingston.

Utterson, a freshman, is a possible title contender in Division IV. She won both her heats in the 800 and 1,600 during last week's Division IV preliminaries at Arcadia High.

Kennett will compete in three events in Division III

Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States.
 - the long jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Detmer, a senior, has been one of the area's top basketball players over the past few seasons but also has excelled in her first year of track.

Livingston will compete in the 300 hurdles.
