In high school girls' tennis, where top players usually play singles, and doubles teams are expected to win matches to help the team score points, it is easy for top doubles players to go unnoticed.

``It's a team,'' he said. ``Sometimes it's doubles that will carry the day.''

``In singles, you have all these ranked players,'' said Caryn Linder, a partner on Granada Hills' top doubles team. ``So it's nice to finally get noticed.''

Linder and teammate Shannon Slotnick are the defending City Section doubles champions and are seeded first for the second year in a row. The seniors posted a 17-0 record this season and haven't lost a match since early in their junior year.

Linder said the format of the individual tournament will change the way she and Slotnick approach matches.

``I think it relieves some of the pressure, because if we lose, it's just Shannon and my fault,'' Linder said. ``But obviously, there's pressure to win it again.''.

Slotnick and Linder are one of few Granada Hills doubles teams that has had the opportunity to play together for two consecutive years.

``I thought about splitting them up,'' Wood said, ``but why change?''

Linder and Slotnick are both glad for the opportunity to play together again this year and have enjoyed both success and each other's company.

``We have so much fun,'' Linder said. ``Even during the finals, we were laughing and having a good time.''

Slotnick said she had no trouble switching partners to play with Linder during her junior year.

``It was real easy playing together,'' Slotnick said. ``We've worked well together since the beginning.''

The beginning came about with Wood's decision to move Linder to doubles after she played No. 3 singles her sophomore year. She admitted the switch was tough, but playing with Slotnick has made it enjoyable.

``It's hilarious,'' she said. ``We're such good friends.''

on the court, but their coach said they also know when to be prepared to play.

``They play the important points very well,'' said Wood. ``They have great chemistry and complement each other very well. They don't beat themselves.''

Last season, all three of Granada Hills' doubles teams reached the semifinals of the individual tournament, forcing two Highlanders teams to face each other. Linder and Slotnick weren't a part of that match, but with two teams seeded in the top eight and a third team entered in the tournament, some of the best competition they face could come from fellow Highlanders.

``You don't want to play your own teammates,'' said Slotnick. ``If that's how it has to be, then that's fine with me.''

Slotnick and Linder agreed a second individual championship might be the best way to redeem redeem v. to buy back, as when an owner who had mortgaged his/her real property pays off the debt. ``Losing in the finals was the hardest part of the season,'' said Slotnick, who won her match with Linder but could only watch as Carson beat Granada Hills in singles matches to capture the title. ``It would be nice to take the title.''
