DOSEDEL HAS STAR QUALITY.

INGLEWOOD - The United States hasn't cornered the Hollywood market for this weekend's Davis Cup quarterfinal.

And the winner for best actor at the Czech Film Festival . . . Slava Dosedel?

It seems fitting that Dosedel is part of the Czech Republic team that will play the U.S. starting Friday at the Forum, near the heart of film industry. He'll soon be spending time with the movie camera focused on him.

He said Wednesday he would rather surpass Ivan Lendl as his country's most famous tennis player than try to make it as an actor. Still, because of his uncanny resemblance to a Czech doctor who cured high fever in the 1800s with cold-water therapy, as well as his living the same healthy, vegetarian lifestyle as said doctor, Dosedel in October starred in ``Life Water.''

``He had the same opinion of life like me,'' Dosedel said. ``He was trying to treat people with nature's type of life, eating right, drinking right, not partying.''

Dosedel learned his lines while on tour, then flew to the Czech Republic to film. The movie debuted in the doctor's hometown of Jesenik.

However, being a movie star there isn't the same as here, he said.

``People recognize me as a tennis player,'' he said. ``I'm on the tour 10 years. They don't bother me. When I'm home (in Prerov), I'm in a small town and everybody knows me. They don't bother me.''

Dosedel, on tour since 1989, is ranked No. 48 in the world. His best finish this season is a quarterfinal loss at Sydney, Australia. The next week, at the Australian Open, he lost in the fourth round to Pete Sampras, who he could face in Sunday's reverse singles.

--Czech them out: The other Czech team members, Jiri Novak, David Rikl and Martin Damm, who each have at least two years of Davis Cup experience, haven't been particularly successful. They've combined for a 14-17 record.
