DONORS LAUDED HOSPITAL PERSONNEL INCREASE BLOOD DONATIONS.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital doctors, nurses and staffers were lauded recently by the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  and presented with a Platinum Award for more than doubling the number of blood donations “Give blood” redirects here. Blood donation is a process by which a blood donor voluntarily has blood drawn for storage in a blood bank, generally for subsequent use in a blood transfusion.

The award was accepted by Dr. Roger Der, co-director of the Laboratory Services and the Blood Bank, during a recognition breakfast in Van Nuys.

``It's the dedication of the physicians and nurses, staff and volunteers who give and give regularly,'' Der said. ``They realize the importance of the need for blood in our community.''

Nationwide, just 5 percent of all eligible blood donors actually contribute; in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , that number falls to 2 percent.

Bhavna Mistry, who heads up the program, thanked Anita Suggs, Cindy Martin, Der, Dr. Barbara Florentine, Luz Blanco-Bicknell, Maria Strmsek and numerous volunteers for helping set a new record.

Because of a new program initiated by the American Red Cross, all units of blood donated at the hospital will be returned to the hospital to be used by local patients.

``People in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  want their money, blood and resources to stay here,'' LeBlanc said. ``So all this blood will come back to this hospital. It's part of a new program.''

Donating blood takes about an hour and begins with a medical evaluation and health questionnaire. Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds.
