DONORS DELUGE PIERCE; OFFERS POUR IN TO HELP REPLACE STOLEN COMPUTERS.Byline: Mary F. Pols Daily News Staff Writer It seemed like Christmas at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics Pierce College offers associate's degrees, mainly in the arts and sciences. There are also certificate programs in early childhood education, social services, dental hygienist, and others. Wednesday as offers poured in to help replace $10,000 worth of stolen computers that the school's disabled students had depended on for their education. ``I've been coordinating phone calls since 7:30 this morning and it's just been nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. The NonStop line was created by Tandem Computers, which was acquired by Compaq, which later became part of HP. ,'' said Miriam Gottlieb of Pierce College's Disabled Student Services office. Gottlieb said people who read about the May 31 theft of five computers and called Pierce College were so eager to help that school officials have high hopes they will be able to restore and perhaps even expand the busy lab, which has a constant waiting list of disabled students. Alumni from as far away as Catalina called to offer financial assistance, representatives from one communications company Communications Company is a communications unit of the United States Marine Corps. They are part of Combat Logistics Regiment 37 , 3rd Marine Logistics Group (3MLG) and III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF). The unit is based out of the Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. said they are checking with its owners to see whether they can donate computers, and countless others called to find out exactly what the school needs. Officials at Cal State Northridge also asked whether they could help. ``There is a silver lining silver lining n. A hopeful or comforting prospect in the midst of difficulty. For 10 quadriplegic students on campus, one voice-activated computer gave them access to equipment they couldn't otherwise use. The computers were stolen by someone who knew enough to pick out the best - and newest - equipment from a small computer lab on the school's Woodland Hills campus. Campus police patrol the area, but the lab was not equipped with an alarm. |
