DONNELLY OFFERS NEW GLARESTOPPER(TM) ELECTROCHROMIC TRUCK MIRROR

DONNELLY OFFERS NEW GLARESTOPPER(TM) ELECTROCHROMIC TRUCK MIRROR
HOLLAND, Mich., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) has completed development and testing of a solid-state electrochromic exterior mirror system for use in the heavy truck industry. This new product is now being offered to the market and production has begun.
The solid-state electrochromic mirror system makes use of high- technology thin-film coatings on glass. These coatings may be darkened when subjected to an electrical current to reduce the glare caused by the reflection of headlights at night and bright sunlight during the day. An important feature of the system is that it allows for total glare control of the exterior mirrors by the driver and is adjustable to individual preferences for glare reduction.
Extensive testing has been done with professional drivers in a number of heavy truck fleets for nearly a year. Reaction to the new product has been very positive with professional drivers expressing enthusiasm for the comfort and added safety offered by the GLARESTOPPER(TM) mirror system
Chairman of the board for Donnelly Corporation, Dwane Baumgardner stated that, "Donnelly has long been committed to the development and commercialization of technologies which allow the user to control the reflectivity and light transmission of glass products. One example of this is Donnelly's introduction of day/night automotive mirrors to the market nearly 50 years ago. These mirrors have been, and continue to be, an efficient tool in controlling the level of light which is reflected into the driver's eyes.
"Today, Donnelly offers two additional state-of-the-art technologies to control glare, improving driver comfort and safety. These are solid- state electrochromic and chemically based electrochromic technologies. Donnelly currently is the only company in the world that offers production capability for both electrochromic technologies. All of Donnelly's electrochromic products offer superior quality and state-of- the-art performance which can be tailored to meet the needs of the customer.
"We are very pleased that our initial effort in the heavy truck industry has generated solid support and we look forward to strong growth in the future as this new mirror continues to gain market acceptance."
The GLARESTOPPER(TM) mirror system is the result of a joint venture with Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI) of Santa Rosa, Calif., to complete development and commercialization of thin-film electrochromic coatings. This joint venture brings together Donnelly's advanced knowledge of electrochromic coatings and OCLI's renowned expertise for the manufacture of high-technology coatings.
