DONNELLY FILES PATENT SUIT AGAINST GENTEX

HOLLAND, Mich., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corp. (AMEX: DON) today filed suit in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, Mich., against Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: GNTX) of Zeeland, Mich., for infringement of four Donnelly patents pertaining to Donnelly's automotive rearview mirror technology. In the lawsuit, Donnelly has requested an injunction to prevent further infringement by Gentex and money damages to compensate for past infringements.
 The four Donnelly patents are:
 1. U.S. Patent No. 5,066,112 titled "Perimeter Coated, Electro- Optic Mirror;"
 2. U.S. Patent No. 4,646,210 titled "Vehicular Mirror and Light Assembly;"
 3. U.S. Patent No. 4,733,336 titled "Lighted-Information Case Assembly for Rear View Mirrors;" and
 4. U.S. Patent No. 4,807,096 titled "Interior Light/Carrier Module for Vehicles."
The first Donnelly patent concerns an improved seal to retain the liquid electrochromic material in a solution-type electrochromic mirror. This technology was pioneered by Donnelly. It is believed that this type of improved seal is used in every interior and exterior electrochromic mirror product currently manufactured by Gentex.
The remaining three patents concern technology for mounting lights in automotive rearview mirrors. Donnelly has also long been a pioneer in developing advanced electronic mirror systems for vehicles and was the first to offer a commercially successful lighted interior mirror system to the industry. Donnelly believes that Gentex's lighted electrochromic mirror products infringe these three patents. Gentex currently supplies lighted electrochromic mirrors for a major automotive manufacturer.
Dwane Baumgardner, CEO of Donnelly Corporation, stated,
"Donnelly has long had a policy of respecting the intellectual
property of others and protecting its own. We will not tolerate the
unauthorized use of our technology and we have initiated this action
to protect our business interests and those of our shareholders.
"Throughout our patent dispute with Gentex, Donnelly has
demonstrated a desire to focus its energies on serving the customer
and offering newer, more advanced mirror systems to the marketplace
rather than competing in the courtroom. While Donnelly does not
wish to incur the cost of litigation, this lawsuit is necessary
because Gentex is infringing on Donnelly's valuable automotive
mirror patent rights and has flatly refused our proposal that the
two companies amicably resolve all their patent disputes."
