DONATED VAN SPEEDS CRASH-SCENE WORK.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Lancaster sheriff's station traffic investigators are getting to nighttime fatal crashes a little quicker thanks to a donation from a Lancaster auto dealer and the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Hunter Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep owners Tom and Tim Fuller donated a Dodge cargo van, while the booster club, of which Tom is president, paid to equip it with about $5,000 worth of gear for use by the deputies assigned to investigate fatal and otherwise serious or high-profile crashes.

``They have to bring a lot of equipment with them. It's a great asset,'' sheriff's Lt. Steve Fredericks said.

The traffic investigators used to carry their gear in a patrol car or two. At night, when they were called from home, that meant driving to the Lancaster station to find whether a patrol car was available and loading the gear into it.

``We'd have it in old bags or old boxes and we'd throw it in the back of a radio car,'' investigator Dennis Campbell said.

The new van is parked during the day at the Lancaster sheriff's station and on nights and weekends at the Quartz Hill sheriff's substation, where it is closer to the homes of the investigators who use it.

If investigators get to crash scenes quicker, they can take photos, make measurements and gather other evidence so the damaged vehicles can be moved and roads reopened quicker to traffic, officials said.
