DONALD CORRELL IS NAMED CEO, DIRECTOR OF UNITED WATER RESOURCES
AND PRESIDENT OF HACKENSACK WATER COMPANY
HARRINGTON PARK, N.J., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of United Water Resources (NYSE: UWR) has elected Donald L. Correll, 42, chief executive officer and a director of United Water and president of its principal business unit, Hackensack Water Company, and Hackensack's subsidiary, Spring Valley Water Company. Chairman Robert A. Gerber announced today's board action and added that Correll will continue as president of United Water, a post to which he was elected in December 1991.
"Don Correll has all the qualities necessary to lead a major U.S. water utility in this decade of change," Gerber said. "He is market- and results-oriented and he's convinced that shareholders benefit only when customers are satisfied. The board is confident in his ability, as captain of our new management team, to achieve important objectives of growth both for our utility business and our non-regulated segments. With Don guiding the company, its best years lie ahead."
Gerber said United Water's board has worked hard over the past several years to provide an orderly management transition in anticipation of the retirements of several key executives, including his own plans to retire at the end of this year. The results of that succession planning have gradually unfolded over the past few months, with a number of executive appointments.
With his new responsibilities, Correll succeeds George M. Haskew, Jr., who retired Sept. 1 as president of the Hackensack and Spring Valley water companies, and Gerber, who served as United Water Resources' CEO since 1980.
Gerber and Haskew will continue to serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively.
Donald L. Correll took the helm of United Water as president in December 1991. Previously he was vice president and chief financial officer, and was responsible for corporate and strategic planning. Correll joined Hackensack Water Company as assistant treasurer in 1976. He was elected treasurer the following year, and in 1982 he was named vice president-treasurer. When the company was restructured to form United Water Resources in 1983, Correll was elected treasurer of the new parent company. In 1986 he was named vice president-treasurer and chief financial officer of United Water. And in January 1988, Correll was given the added responsibilities of senior vice president-finance for Hackensack Water Company.
Before joining Hackensack Water, Correll was with the public accounting firm, Price Waterhouse. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and holds a master's degree (MBA) in finance from the New York University Graduate School of Business. He is a certified public accountant in the state of New York.
A member of the board of directors of the National Association of Water Companies, Correll chairs its finance committee and is a member of its government relations committee. He is also a past chairman of the organization's New Jersey chapter. He is president and a trustee of the Academic Decathlon of New Jersey and a trustee of the Bergen-Passaic chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Correll lives in Ridgewood, NJ, with his wife and their three children.
Robert A. Gerber, 64, who joined the company 30 years ago, was president of United Water from its 1983 formation as parent company of Hackensack Water Company, until late 1991. From 1979 to 1988, Gerber was president of Hackensack Water, and he took on the responsibilities of chief executive officer in 1980. A director since 1983, Gerber was elected chairman of the board in 1988.
George M. Haskew, Jr., 65, who retired Sept. 1 as president of Hackensack and Spring Valley water companies, will continue as vice chairman of the board of United Water Resources. He joined Hackensack Water in 1965 as chief engineer and moved into positions of increasing responsibility. He was named president of the utilities in 1988.
United Water Resources is a holding company engaged in water-related businesses and real estate. Its utility subsidiaries, Hackensack and Spring Valley water companies, serve over one million people in Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey and Rockland County, New York. United Water's real estate subsidiary, Rivervale Realty Company, owns developable land and several office buildings in the metropolitan area. Other subsidiaries provide environmental testing, automatic meter reading services, and construct and operate small water and sewer utilities.
