DON PORTER, WAS FATHER ON `GIDGET'.

Don Porter, best known for playing the father of ``Gidget'' in the television series with Sally Field Sally Margaret Field (born November 6, 1946) is a two-time Academy Award winning American actress. She is also a three-time Emmy Award-winning and two-time Golden Globe Award winner who became a household name at age 20 as Sister Bertrille in the 1960s sitcom , has died. He was 84.

Porter died Feb. 11 at his home in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

He was born in Oklahoma and served in World War II before beginning a career in show business that lasted for decades.

He began acting on stage in Portland, Ore., and starred in more than 200 plays across the country.

On Broadway he performed in ``Plaza Suite Plaza Suite is a play by Neil Simon.

It is composed of three acts, each involving different characters but all set in Suite 719 of New York City's Plaza Hotel.
,'' ``Any Wednesday'' and a revival of ``The Front Page.''

In the 1960s Porter played Professor Russ Lawrence, the widowed father of the teen-ager Gidget, played by Sally Field.

In one of television's earliest sitcoms, ``Private Secretary,'' Porter played Peter Sands Peter Sands is a former Irish politician who briefly served as a member of the 22nd Seanad Éireann for Fianna Fáil. The family asked that any memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army or to the Motion Picture and Television Fund.
