DON'T TOUCH! MIZRAHI'S HANDS-ON INTERVIEW STYLE STILL A RED-CARPET CONTROVERSY.

Byline: Valerie Kuklenski Staff Writer

STRAIGHT MEN everywhere were thought to be jealous of Isaac Mizrahi Isaac Mizrahi (born October 14, 1961) is an American fashion designer. Biography
Mizrahi was born in Brooklyn, New York of Egyptian Jewish heritage.[1] He is the cousin of rock guitarist Sylvain Sylvain, former player in the New York Dolls.
, the openly gay designer and E! commentator who shocked and awed on the Golden Globes red carpet by squeezing Scarlett Johansson's breast, peeking down Teri Hatcher's halter halter

, attempting to check Eva Longoria's bikini wax and quizzing star after star about her underwear.

Who, though, would envy Mizrahi's position now? On one hand, his bosses at E! Entertainment Television have been thrilled by all the attention his arrivals reporting has received from TV columnists and Internet chatters and probably are encouraging him to pull off another standout performance tonight.

On the other hand, every reporter granted access to the Academy Awards arrivals area knows that any offensive behavior can result in having the red carpet yanked right out from under him.

Mizrahi is stuck between a 10-carat Harry Winston Harry Winston (March 1, 1896 – December 8, 1978) was an American jeweller. He donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958 after owning it for a decade.  diamond and a hard place.

In an interview posted Friday on USA Today's Pop Candy blog, Mizrahi said he was surprised by the controversy his behavior sparked, saying ``every single joke'' on such sitcoms as ``Will & Grace,'' ``My Name Is Earl'' and ``Friends'' relates to breasts or pubic hair pubic hair,

.

``And, you know, there were people who loved it. I have to say, most of the people I spoke to afterward were surprised by the controversy, but they weren't surprised by how I handled (the red carpet), because that's who I am,'' he told Pop Candy.

He said a lengthy red-carpet show can become too predictable without some effort toward making it interesting.

``After all, I don't want it to be seen as just killing time until the event itself; I want to make it an event. And so I just asked the questions that interested me and my producers,'' he told the blog. ``You know, the last thing I want to become is one of those talking heads

She is known for her brash manner and loud, raspy voice with a heavy metropolitan New York accent. , possibly because, as a fashion designer, he is accustomed to touching models' bodies as he fits them for runway shows.

He cupped Johansson's breast because he said he was curious about how her ample endowments were supported in that red Valentino gown with the plunging back. (Built-in bra, she revealed as her complexion began matching both her dress color and her name). She laughed at the time, but she has since said she was not amused.

Johannson's publicist, Marcel Pariseau, also a gay man, said he was more taken aback than his client that night. ``I didn't even know it happened because she was up on the platform, and I had my back to her,'' he said. ``My boyfriend called and said, 'Your client just got felt up.'

``I don't think a straight man could have gotten away with it - or a straight woman,'' Pariseau added.

Johannson will not be at the Oscars this year, but as one of the most glamorous figures on awards red carpets, she is likely to cross paths again with Mizrahi.

``I would venture to say, yes, we'll go see him again, and hopefully he'll clean up his act,'' Pariseau said.

Joan and Melissa Rivers Melissa Rivers (born on January 20, 1968) is an American actress and television co-host for fashion/red carpet interviews on cable and satellite television, previously for the E! cable network and currently for the TV Guide channel with her mother, comedian Joan Rivers. , Mizrahi's predecessors at E! who will be covering arrivals live on the TV Guide Channel, said the Oscars' history and status demand more decorum DECORUM.  than other events.

``You don't squeeze at the Oscars. You squeeze at the Golden Globes, you have a field day at the Emmys,'' Joan said. ``The Oscars? Keep your hands in your pockets.''

``I know they sort of fell back with Isaac on, 'He's a designer, so he's used to touching people,' '' Melissa said. ``But on these nights, as a designer, he should know better. These dresses are fit within an inch of their lives, and you don't want someone messing up your hair or messing up your dress or any of those things.''

At the recent Oscars fashion preview, a runway show of the types of gowns one might expect to see at this year's awards, it was easy to imagine which ones would bring out Mizrahi's intrusive questions. Two ultra-sheer Krizia creations practically beg the underwear inquiry.

Veteran Oscars fashion coordinator Patty Fox has known Mizrahi for many years, since she launched his first collection at Saks Fifth Avenue Saks Fifth Avenue is a chain of upscale American department stores that is owned and operated by Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises (SFAE), a subsidiary of Saks Incorporated. ``I don't think an awards show is the place to talk about the things he speaks about. We're not there to celebrate women's undergarments. We're there to celebrate performances,'' Adams said. ``There are some things that are sacred, I still believe. I think it should still be a little old-fashioned, without being extremely provincial or prudish. We can still have some dignity.''
