DON'T WASTE ANOTHER DAY ON LAUSD FIGHT.Byline: FABIAN NUNEZ Local View WE all want the same thing: the best education for our children. This modern and well-equipped facility is a testament to the district's administrative abilities. The board has addressed a critical need by building classrooms. But now we must focus on what takes place in the classroom. The backbone of our economy is based on the emergence of highly skilled and literate critical thinkers from our school system. Our school system needs to develop thousands of these highly qualified types of pupils, not handfuls. And they can't do it on their own. They need help. The mayor and his partners have the wherewithal and ability to provide the school district the help it needs to improve. Los Angeles Unified shouldn't stand alone in confronting its many challenges. Solving the issues associated with teaching these children is also a problem that the mayor and the greater community can address. The school district has proven that it needs help on a whole host of educational issues including preparing students for a postsecondary education. Greater involvement by the mayor and the community can only be a plus for Los Angeles' students. Rather than stalling through litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. When a person begins a civil lawsuit, the person enters into a process called litigation. over the new law or rushing to find a new superintendent and eschewing input from the greater community, we need to focus on what is our mutual and ultimate goal -- providing the best public education for all of LAUSD's students. Parents, students, teachers, community leaders and elected officials ought to recognize this as our chance to come together and open the doors of opportunity for our kids. We should not waste another day debating the governance of LAUSD. Just as Miguel Contreras High School required a broad community partnership to become a reality, so too must we seize this opportunity to build a community partnership to improve educational outcomes for our children. |
