DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SEMINAR PLANNED.

A daylong seminar focusing on the history of domestic violence in Ventura County and the cycle of violence will be held Saturday at Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. .

District Attorney Michael D. Bradbury and members of his Victim Service Unit are scheduled to speak at the health seminar to be given between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts auditorium, 7075 Campus Road.

Bradbury said Wednesday that when he began working with Moorpark College instructor MoDean McCullough 25 years ago to shine a light on domestic violence, attitudes toward the crimes was much different.

``The law was almost winked at by law enforcement then,'' he said Wednesday. ``You had the male law enforcement agency Noun 1. law enforcement agency - an agency responsible for insuring obedience to the laws

 siding with the male batterers. And in the rare incident when someone did get arrested, the following Monday morning, the victim was in our office begging us to drop the charges. The response to that was we dropped the case.

``We are light-years from that now,'' he said.

Since the early 1990s, the District Attorney's Office has prosecuted an average of 2,000 domestic violence cases per year countywide. In 1993, there were between 1,000 and 1,200 cases; that number jumped to 1,600 in 1994.

In 1995 and 1996, the number was about 1,900. Last year, the office prosecuted approximately 1,800 cases.

Advocates from the Victim Services Unit assist in an average of 3,000 restraining orders restraining order: see injunction.  per year.

Officials said the increased awareness of the crimes has likely been the cause of the rise in the number of reported offenses.

McCullough said she established the one-day course last year as part of a series of lectures on issues of health and safety. The response to it was so positive she decided to discuss the topic on a regular basis.
