``Real Roseanne'' seeks to follow in the ``Osbournes'' tradition of casting her family as wacky sitcom characters and in the ``Project Greenlight'' story line of a rudderless production falling apart but is far too self-conscious in its efforts: She recruits a ``face reader'' to appraise showrunner candidates for her cooking series.

 back when she was seemingly out of control, a running theme of ``The Real Roseanne Show'' is her effort to control her temper, to simply ``be nice,'' and a less rowdy Roseanne is basically like watching your only vaguely interesting neighbor unedited. What's kind of sad is watching as Roseanne repeatedly turns to those around her for approval, as they constantly reassure her by laughing, a little too assertively, at her putative quips.

Nonetheless, Roseanne underscores the hubris Hubris

An arrogance due to excessive pride and an insolence toward others. A classic character flaw of a trader or investor.
 that convinced her that both this and the cooking shows are good ideas: ``I'm the genius, and I'll take care of the funny.'' At one point, one of her hangers-on asks of the sketchy concept they've slapped together for the cable series, ``Is that enough to do a show?'' Roseanne replies: ``Who gives a (expletive)?'' That seems to be the overriding theory applying here, as well.

In a nutshell: ``Osbournes'' + ``Project Greenlight'' - entertainment value = Roseanne's show.
