With a caress and a kiss, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg Jackie Goldberg (born June 16, 1937) is an American politician and teacher, and a member of the Democratic Party. She is a former member of the California State Assembly.  and her partner of 20 years filled out forms Thursday to become one of the first couples to register as domestic partners.

Goldberg and Sharon Stricker were among dozens of same-sex couples to seek purple-inked certificates on the first day the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder offered domestic partner registration.

``It doesn't confer any legal rights,'' Goldberg said. ``But we do know that in the city of Los Angeles

County Assessor Kenneth Hahn Kenneth "Kenny" Frederick Hahn (August 19, 1920–1997) was a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for forty years from 1952 to 1992. Prior to his election, Hahn served on the Los Angeles City Council.  said becoming an official domestic partner means he and longtime companion Louis Mangual are no longer ``just two guys living down the street.''

``We're loving and committed,'' said Hahn, who was second in line to register. ``It gives me great pleasure that this celebrates our 25th anniversary. I'm just extra delighted.''

Over slices of ``Just Registered'' cake, the couples and gay and lesbian activists said their ultimate goal - civic marriage with all its binding legal responsibilities - will take years to get and will be a tough fight.

``It's not about the homosexual agenda The homosexual agenda (or the gay agenda) is a term used by some social conservatives in the United States to describe the goal of increasing LGBT acceptance and equality through public policies, media exposure, and cultural change. , it's about civil rights,'' said Andy Ball, public policy manager of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, a sponsor of the celebration Thursday.

Still, activists count domestic partner registration as an important first step.

Hahn said he has been pressing for this option for two years. Goldberg joined in last year and enlisted the help of county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky Zev Yaroslavsky (born December 21, 1948) is a Los Angeles County politician. The one-page form requires only that the two people give their name, address, date of birth and a signature. Optional information can be included such as the length of a relationship, whether the couple jointly own property or if they share a household.

Registration costs $20 plus $6 for a certified copy A photocopy of a document, judgment, or record that is signed and attested to as an accurate and a complete reproduction of the original document by a public official in whose custody the original has been placed for safekeeping. . ``We got butterflies even though we knew we weren't getting married,'' said Luckett, a college student.

``It seems so sterile to come to a government office and fill out paperwork, but it was exciting to sign it together,'' Belsanti said. ``At least we know there's something that has a record of our committed relationships to each other.''

``Whereas before it was just word of mouth,'' Luckett said before they went for a ``honeymoon'' breakfast.
