DOME 3.3, an application-oriented approach to implementing fail-safe, scalable and secure distributed systems, announced by Suite Software.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1996--Suite Software, a leading provider of middleware products and services that help companies implement scalable, distributed applications, announced the immediate availability of DOME Release 3.3 (Distributed Object Management Environment) at Object World West '96, Aug. 20-22, in San Jose.

New with this release of DOME is DOME Manager, a graphical management tool and DOME Lite, a 32-bit version of the DOME client implementation. The company also announced a roll-out plan for bringing the DOME ORB (Object Request Broker See ORB.

(programming) Object Request Broker - (ORB) Part of the OMG CORBA specification, an ORB's basic function is to pass method invocation requests to the correct objects and return the results to the caller.
) into compliance with the CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  2.0 specification.

The DOME Tool Set

Designed for application developers and end users who implement and operate distributed systems, DOME is a set of middleware application tools which combine asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  messaging, an ORB and distributed-object services to provide distributed applications of all sizes with built-in fail-safe availability, scalability and security.

The tools include: DOME, the core product; DOME Manager, a GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  management interface; DOME Security, a Kerberos-based integrated security subsystem; and DOMEshell, a powerful scripting language. Working together, these products enable the implementation of Dynamic Namespace Management (DNM DNM Digital Natural Motion (Philips)

), a scalable middleware application which is at the core of Suite Software's corporate strategy.

Prices vary by platform and quantity, with ranges from $100 for DOME Lite for Windows 95 to $3,000 for DOME with DOME Manager on a large UNIX server. DOME Security and DOMEshell are separately priced options from $250 to $1,200 each for small workstations and large servers, respectively.

High Availability and Scalability are Prime Benefits of DOME

DOME's Dynamic Namespace Management is a scalable middleware application that provides built-in high availability, scalability and security usually affordable only for large ``mission critical'' applications.

Utilizing DOME, distributed applications of all sizes can enjoy these benefits while still using familiar development tools such as C, C++, Objective C, COBOL COBOL: see programming language.

and 4GLs, and without the need for costly programming and maintenance efforts.

The namespace is key because it is the location in a distributed system where the parameters and rules for systems operation all come together and is, therefore, the place where the greatest impact on an application's behavior can be made.

These parameters and rules govern: the location and interaction of objects, security administration, as well as the implementation of real-time failover, come-back and resynchronization logic.

By managing the namespace in real time, the application isolates itself from such adverse events as intermittent hardware and software failures, process outages and reconfigurations by operations.

Distributed Object Services Enable DOME's Robust Features

Providing the infrastructure around DOME's ORB and its asynchronous, message-oriented middleware (MOM) architecture are a complete set of distributed-object services. The services include: security, distributed directory, naming, event, interface and implementation repository, life cycle, persistence and time.

Building distributed applications with DOME's built-in services to handle much of the systems-management drudgery lets application developers focus on the business aspects of the end users rather than the technology. Integrated services are a significant advantage of Suite Software's DOME product set over the competition.

DOME Manager Provides Graphical Management Tool

Included for the first time in DOME Release 3.3 is the DOME Manager. This GUI management tool provides for the visual management and monitoring of the entire DOME namespace environment. Utilizing DOME Manager, systems administrators can see all users, objects, nodes, databases, applications, etc., in the namespace.

In addition, the DOME Manager can start and stop applications and servers in real time.

Suite Software also announced plans to bring its dynamic ORB into compliance with the CORBA 2.0 specifications over the next few months.

``The ORB used in DOME was built to satisfy some early users who wanted the greater flexibility and adaptability offered by a dynamic implementation,'' stated Fred Tremblay, Suite Software's president and chief executive officer.

``From our analysis of the Object Management Group's direction toward Trading Services, and the commitment of both Microsoft and Digital to a dynamic offering, we have decided to focus on the dynamic implementation of our ORB and its use with Dynamic Namespace Management.

``The dynamic approach appears to be the long-term strategy for some of the large ORB users who recognize the implementation issues involved with distributed objects. Our strategy includes making DOME's ORB CORBA 2.0 compliant before finishing the work on the static IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. For example, objects in the CORBA distributed object environment are defined by an IDL, which describes the services performed by the object and how the data  (Interface Definition Language See IDL.

).''

Commenting on the announcement, Max Dolgicer, a leading middleware-industry consultant and director of International Systems Group, a New York-based consultancy, stated: ``Suite Software has long been at the forefront of the object-oriented and messaging- middleware market.

``The availability of DOME 3.3 with built-in support for essential middleware services, along with a commitment to provide CORBA 2.0 compliance and COM support for its ORB, makes Suite Software's products an excellent choice for companies investing in distributed computing today and with a vision into tomorrow.''
