    Name: Sandeep Mehrotra

    Residence: Saugus

    Occupation: Engineer

    Age: 35

How he got started: After watching a friend invest in the stock market, Mehrotra jumped in himself in 1991. His first stock was his long distance company, AT&T, of which he purchased 100 shares for around $35 and sold it for about $45 three months later. Today, he owns five stocks. Four are technology firms and one is a Mexican bank, which his broker recommended.

Best stock pick: In 1995, he bought 500 shares of Softkey, now known as The Learning Co., for $15 each and sold it for double the price in two months.

Worst stock pick: 3DO, a multimedia player maker. He bought 200 shares for $30 in 1993 and sold it half a year later for $10.

Investment philosophy: ``When I started out, I picked names I recognized. Now, I look for companies that are out of favor or whose price has dropped a lot. Many times, a company reports bad news and the stock drops. It should, but many times it gets overdone o·ver·done
