How he got started: McCully became intrigued with the idea of owning stock in a company after taking accounting classes in college. He started tracking stocks in 1980, and shortly thereafter bought his first stock, Lear Petroleum. He bought 200 shares at $13 and sold it at $32 a share eight months later. The $3,800 profit paid for one term's tuition.

Best stock pick: Florida Power and Light. He bought it for a split-adjusted $18 a share in 1983 then sold it a year later for $38. In 1996, he bought the stock again for an average price of $44.50 and sold it months later for $47.
