DOLLAR RENT A CAR DONATES $1 TO SPECIAL OLYMPICS INTERNATIONAL ON BEHALF OF U.S. TRAVEL AGENTS FOR EVERY RENTAL CAR BOOKED

LOS ANGELES, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Dollar Rent A Car, a Quadrennial Premiere Gold Sponsor and the "Official Car Rental Company" of Special Olympics International (SOI), announced the donation of $1 to SOI for every Dollar Rent A Car booking made by travel agents on airline computer reservation systems through April 16, 1993.
Attention-grabbing headlines featured in a new advertising campaign include "Let's Give Them A Lift," "Special Olympics Starting Blocks" and "One Special Dollar To Help Them Down the Stretch." This is one of the highlights of a multifaceted fundraising and marketing campaign aimed at building awareness of Special Olympics, while driving customers to their travel agents.
As a Premiere Gold Sponsor, Dollar's commitment includes a multimillion dollar contribution of financial and marketing support and a substantial donation of in-kind vehicles. Dollar will carry this designation for four years, until 1995, including the 1993 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Salzburg and Schladming, Austria, and the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games in New Haven, Conn.
Dollar is the first car rental company to become a Premiere Sponsor of SOI in the organization's 25-year history. "Dollar is pleased to be the first in its category to `join the world of winners,'" said Gary Paxton, Dollar's president and chief executive officer.
"We are a company that is dedicated to giving back to the community," added Bob Mathes, vice president of marketing for Dollar, "and our Dollar community extends to 60 countries worldwide." Mathes feels that the relationship between Dollar and SOI is "a perfect match because Special Olympics needs transportation to practices and games for their coaches, athletes and their families, and we are able to provide that for them."
"We are very happy that Dollar has joined in our mission to provide sports training and competition to persons with mental retardation by becoming a premiere sponsor," said Sargent Shriver, chairman and chief executive officer of SOI. "As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, Dollar's support of Special Olympics provides expanded opportunities to our athletes around the world."
In its commitment to give back to the community, programs are currently in place through which Dollar employees and families are encouraged to volunteer and support the local chapters of SOI. To help build awareness of SOI across the country, Dollar is featuring SOI in all corporate marketing and operations materials and activities, including Dollar advertising, letterhead and rental agreements, as well as at rental counters. Dollar is also reaching out to Special Olympics families, supporters and volunteers via special Dollar welcome kits and discounted rates.
Special Olympics International is the world's largest year-round sports organization for children and adults with mental retardation, with chapters in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and 127 countries worldwide. Since being founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, SOI has provided training and competition to millions of athletes.
