DOLLAR GENERAL REPORTS INCREASED SALES FOR MAY.


NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 1996--Dollar General Corporation (NYSE NYSE

: DG) today reported total retail sales for the four weeks ended May 31, 1996, equaled $155.6 million compared with $122.6 million in 1995, an increase of 26.9 percent.

"The arrival of Spring to our markets, especially in the Midwest, stimulated sales of seasonal merchandise, particularly apparel," said Cal Turner, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "These results are a great start for the second quarter!"

For the seventeen weeks ended May 31, Dollar General total retail sales increased 24.4 percent to $600.9 million from $483.2 million in the same period a year ago. Same stores sales for the seventeen-week period increased 10.0 percent.
