More styling contests and presentations such as ``The Art of Styling Terriers'' and the ``Wonderful World of Spaniels'' will be held throughout the weekend, but Sunday's creative grooming competition promises to be the most colorful, said Sally Liddick, Barkleigh president. Past winners have included a white poodle dyed sky blue, a gray schnauzer schnauzer (shnou`zər), a sturdy, wirehaired dog developed in S Germany. There are three separate breeds of schnauzer distinguished by their size. The standard schnauzer is a medium-sized dog whose existence in Germany dates back to the 15th cent. with his bottom-half colored aqua, a white Lhasa apso Lhasa apso (lä`sə ăp`sō), breed of small, alert nonsporting dog developed in Tibet many centuries ago. It stands about 11 in. (27.9 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 13 to 15 lb (5.9–6.8 kg). with pink stripes, a yellow and purple dyed dog that looked more like a bumble bee than a canine, a white poodle stenciled with black triangles, and a pink and blue pooch that was supposed to resemble a butterfly. DiMarino said it's not just the groomer's skill that is being evaluated but also the rapport with the animal. ``Aggressive groomers are dismissed from competition,'' she said. ``Safety is also an issue. Are the scissors left on the table where the dog can step on them?'' DiMarino said those are also important things to consider for anyone bringing their dog to a groomer. ``Ask to see where the dogs are kept,'' DiMarino said. ``There should be no hesitation. They should be proud to show you. They should want you to see.'' Pam Lauritzen, publisher of Pet Stylist magazine and an award-winning groomer, agreed and said a good groomer is someone who continues learning. ``Look for certificates on the wall,'' Lauritzen said. ``It's even better if they have awards, too.'' The expo will run until 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For registration information, call (610) 660-0767, Ext. 23, or call the Burbank Airport Hilton at (818) 843-6000.
